Vela Privacy Policy
Last updated 9 June 2026
Vela is a private, offline-first period and cycle tracker. This policy explains, in plain language, exactly what the app handles, where it lives, and why your data stays under your control. The short version: everything you log is stored on your own device, and Vela has no account, no server, and no way to see your data. We do not collect, transmit, sell, or share your information.
The short version
Vela is built privacy-first. There is no Vela account, no sign-up, no login, and no Vela-operated server or backend. We never receive, see, or transmit your data to our own systems.
Everything you enter is stored locally on your device. Optional features (iCloud backup and Apple Health sync) keep your data inside your own Apple account and on your own devices. Nothing leaves your control unless you choose to use those Apple features or export a file yourself.
We do not use analytics, ads, third-party trackers, or any SDKs that phone home. We do not sell or share your data with anyone. This was confirmed by a review of the app's source code.
What data Vela handles
Vela helps you track your menstrual cycle. The information you choose to enter can include: period start and end dates, cycle predictions and ovulation estimates that the app calculates from your entries, moods, and free-text notes.
The app also derives predictions and estimates on your device from the dates you log. These calculations happen locally; they are not sent anywhere.
Some of this is sensitive health and reproductive information. We treat it that way. It is handled with the strong privacy posture described throughout this policy, and it never leaves your control except through the optional Apple features you explicitly enable or a file you choose to export.
Where your data is stored (on your device)
All of your Vela data is stored locally on your device using the device's on-device storage (AsyncStorage). It stays on the phone or tablet where you entered it.
Because there is no Vela server, we cannot access your entries, and we receive nothing when you use the app. Vela works offline; an internet connection is not required to track your cycle.
If you delete the app without using iCloud backup, the locally stored data is removed by the operating system along with the app.
Optional iCloud backup (Apple CloudKit private database)
If you turn it on, Vela can back up and sync your data through Apple's iCloud using CloudKit's private database. This is tied to your personal Apple ID and is fully optional.
With this enabled, your data syncs only between your own devices that are signed in to your Apple account. It lives in your private iCloud space, governed by Apple's iCloud terms and privacy practices, not in any Vela system.
The developer of Vela cannot access this data. We have no keys to it and no visibility into it. You can turn iCloud backup off at any time, and you can manage or remove the app's iCloud data through your Apple device's iCloud settings.
Optional Apple Health sync
If you grant permission, Vela can two-way sync your periods and moods with Apple Health on your device. This only happens after you explicitly allow it through Apple's Health permission prompts.
Vela reads relevant cycle data from Apple Health to show your history and predictions, and writes the periods (and moods) you log back into Apple Health. This exchange stays on your device and within Apple Health.
You control these permissions and can change or revoke them at any time in the Apple Health app or your device's privacy settings. If you do not grant permission, this feature simply stays off.
Local notifications and reminders
Vela can schedule optional reminders and notifications, such as upcoming-cycle reminders. These are scheduled locally on your device.
There is no push server involved. Vela does not register for or use remote push notifications, so no notification data is sent to us or any third party.
You can enable or disable notifications through the app or your device's system settings.
Importing your history
Vela lets you import existing cycle history. You can pick a Flo PDF export or a screenshot, and Vela reads the relevant dates from it.
This reading happens entirely on your device using on-device text recognition (OCR). The file and its contents are processed locally and are not uploaded to Vela or any external service.
Only the dates you choose to import are added to your local Vela data; the original file remains wherever you keep it.
Exporting your data
You can export your history as a PDF that you control. The export is generated on your device.
Where that file goes next is up to you. If you share, email, or save it somewhere, that destination is outside Vela and is governed by whatever service or app you send it to.
Vela does not transmit your export anywhere on its own.
What we do NOT do
We do not collect or transmit your data to Vela or to any third party. There is no backend that receives your entries.
We do not use analytics, advertising, or third-party trackers, and the app contains no SDKs that send your data off-device.
We do not sell, rent, or share your personal or health data with anyone. There is no profiling and no data brokering.
Your control and how to delete your data
You stay in control of your data. You can edit or remove individual entries within the app at any time.
Vela provides a way to clear your data on the device. To remove everything, you can clear the app's data and, if you used iCloud backup, also remove the app's data from your iCloud account through your Apple device's settings. Deleting the app removes the local data stored on that device.
If you used Apple Health sync, data written to Apple Health is managed in the Apple Health app, where you can review or delete it independently.
Children's privacy
Vela is not directed to children, and it is intended for users who are old enough to use the App Store and to track their own cycle data.
Because Vela has no account system and collects no data on its servers, we do not knowingly collect any information from children. We have no server-side data to identify or remove.
If a parent or guardian has concerns about a child's use of the app, the data is stored only on that child's device and can be removed by clearing the app's data or deleting the app.
Sensitive and health data
Cycle, period, ovulation, mood, and note data is sensitive and personal. Vela is designed so this information stays under your control.
It remains on your device by default and only ever moves through Apple's iCloud (your private CloudKit database) or Apple Health when you explicitly enable those options, or in a file you choose to export. We never see it.
This local-only, no-account design is intentional, precisely because reproductive and health data deserves strong protection.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time, for example to reflect new features or to clarify our practices.
When we make changes, we will update the "Last updated" date at the top of this policy. Significant changes may also be noted in the app or its store listing.
Continuing to use Vela after an update means the revised policy applies to your use of the app.
